Bluesky post preview

Free Bluesky Post Preview

Bluesky counts graphemes rather than characters, so a post that a normal character counter says is too long may fit, and one you thought was fine may not. This counts it the way Bluesky does.

All about the Bluesky post preview

Graphemes are not characters

Bluesky limits posts to 300 graphemes. A grapheme is what a reader perceives as a single symbol, which is not the same as a character in the underlying encoding. A complex emoji built from several code points counts as one grapheme but would count as several characters in a naive counter, and the same applies to many non Latin scripts. The practical effect is that a standard character count gives you the wrong number, sometimes generously and sometimes not, which is why counting the way the platform counts is worth doing.

What to check before posting

Counting and embeds are the two things that surprise people.

  • The grapheme count rather than a character count, particularly if the post uses emoji.
  • How a link embed renders, since it adds a card that changes the visual weight of the post.
  • How a quoted post appears, which takes up considerable space beneath your text.
  • That any image has alt text, since Bluesky inherited a strong expectation of it.
  • Whether the tone matches the platform, which is informal and reacts badly to corporate phrasing.
  • Whether the topic is clear enough for custom feeds to pick it up.

Embeds change the shape of a post

Bluesky renders several kinds of embed and they occupy real space.

  • A link produces a card with a title, description and image drawn from the page.
  • A quoted post appears in full beneath your text, which can dwarf a short comment.
  • Images render inline and can be attached in multiples, each with its own alt text.
  • A post with both a comment and a large quote reads very differently from the text alone.
  • Checking the rendered version avoids publishing something visually unbalanced.

Who uses this tool

People adjusting from character counted platforms.

  • People coming from X who assume the counting works the same way.
  • Anyone posting with emoji, where the count differs most noticeably.
  • People writing in non Latin scripts, where character counting is especially misleading.
  • Anyone quoting posts and finding their own comment visually swamped.
  • Users checking alt text is attached before publishing.

When this is not the right tool

Getting the count right does not help if you post when nobody is awake. Bluesky uses a chronological default feed, so timing affects reach more directly than on algorithmic platforms and no amount of formatting compensates. The preview also cannot show which custom feeds might pick up your post, since that depends on infrastructure other users maintain. For the post itself, use the Bluesky caption generator, and the character counter also measures graphemes correctly across platforms.

How teams picture using RepeatPost

“Honestly, the calendar is what sold me. I could see every channel in one view and spot the week we'd gone quiet. Before this I was juggling three spreadsheets and a Slack thread. Now I plan the month on a Monday morning and I'm done by half ten.”

“We run social for eleven clients and keeping them separate used to be a genuine anxiety of mine. Workspaces fixed that. Each client sits in their own space, approvals route to the right person, and I've stopped worrying that someone's going to push a dental practice promo to a restaurant account at 6am.”

Marcus Reed

“I batch a fortnight of content on a Sunday arvo and then I don't think about it again. Reckon it's saved me a solid day a week. Only gripe is the mobile app still feels a step behind the web version, so I do the actual planning on my laptop. Everything else is spot on.”

Chloe Baxter

“I'm handling social for four small brands and writing captions was eating my whole morning. The AI drafts are actually quite usable now. I still rewrite maybe every third one to sound like the client, but starting from something beats staring at a blank box. The hashtag tool alone I'm using daily.”

Ananya Raghavan

“I sell fabrics and my customers find me on Instagram mostly. Posting used to be whenever I remembered, which was maybe twice a week. Now I sit down every Sunday evening, load up two weeks, and it goes out on its own. Sales have followed. I'd like to see WhatsApp added properly, that's my one ask.”

Chidinma Eze

“Our team is five people and we were losing posts in Slack threads. Someone would approve something, someone else would tweak it, and nobody knew which version went live. The approval flow sorted that in a week. Fair play, it's the least glamorous feature on the site and it's the one I'd miss most.”

Frequently Asked
Questions

A grapheme is what a reader perceives as one symbol. A complex emoji built from several code points counts as one grapheme but several characters, so a standard character counter gives you the wrong number for Bluesky.

Three hundred graphemes. That is more than X allows on a free account, and because of how graphemes are counted you can usually fit slightly more real content than a naive character count would suggest.

Because Bluesky renders quoted posts in full beneath your text. A short comment on a long quote ends up visually swamped, which is worth checking before publishing rather than after.

No. The description sits outside the post’s own allowance. That means you can write a thorough image description without it consuming any of your 300 graphemes.

More than on most platforms of its age. Bluesky grew substantially from users who had also spent time on Mastodon, and they brought fediverse accessibility norms with them, so its absence is often noticed.

Less than timing does. The default feed is chronological, so posting while your audience is asleep costs you reach in a way no formatting choice compensates for. Custom feeds are the other route beyond followers.
