Instagram title generator
Free Instagram Title Generator
Instagram has no title field. What functions as your title is the first line of your caption, the roughly 125 characters shown before the More link, and on Reels it is the on screen text in the opening second.

All about the Instagram title generator
There is no title, only a first line
Unlike YouTube or Pinterest, Instagram gives you no title field at all. What performs the same function is the opening of your caption, because Instagram truncates in feed at roughly 125 characters and hides the rest behind a More link. That first line has to earn the tap. On Reels the equivalent is the on screen text in the opening second, since most viewers start with the sound off and judge whether to keep watching before any caption is read. Both are titles in everything except name.
How to write an Instagram opening
Same principles as a headline, applied to a caption.
- Put the payoff in the first sentence rather than building toward it, since building loses everyone before the point arrives.
- Be specific. A concrete claim or number outperforms a vague promise and holds attention afterwards.
- Keep hashtags out of the opening, because they consume the visible characters your hook needs.
- For Reels, write on screen text separately. It is shorter, it appears first, and it works without sound.
- Do not repeat what the image shows, since the viewer is already looking at it.
- Read it truncated at 125 characters and check the promise is complete.
Feed posts and Reels need different openings
They are consumed differently, so the same line rarely works for both.
- A feed caption opening is read after the image has already stopped the scroll, so it can build on what is visible.
- A Reel hook competes for the first second of a video, before the viewer has any context.
- On screen text has to be short enough to read at a glance and legible against the footage.
- Reels are frequently watched muted, so the on screen text carries the entire promise initially.
- Carousels sit between the two, since the first slide functions somewhat like a thumbnail.
Who uses this tool
People whose posts get seen but not read.
- Creators whose captions are good but whose opening lines bury the point.
- Businesses posting Reels who need on screen text for the first second.
- Anyone whose posts get impressions and very little engagement.
- People writing carousels who need a first slide that earns the swipe.
- Accounts whose captions currently open with a greeting or a preamble.
Instagram opening specs
The numbers that define the visible space.
| Detail | Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Title field | None | The first line does the job |
| Visible before truncation | Around 125 characters | Then a More link |
| Caption limit | 2,200 characters | Most of it hidden initially |
| Reels hook | On screen text, first second | Works without sound |
| Carousel first slide | Functions as a thumbnail | Earns the swipe |
| Hashtag placement | End of caption or first comment | Keeps the opening clear |
| Cost | Free | No account and no card |
| Rights to the output | Yours to use commercially | Including client accounts |
Instagram does not publish its exact truncation point and it varies slightly by device, so 125 characters is working guidance. Checked September 2026.
When this is not the right tool
A strong opening on a weak post gets more people to notice that it is weak. Instagram distributes on engagement and watch time, so the content decides reach and the opening only converts the attention you already earned. If the image or the video is the problem, no first line fixes it. For the full caption rather than just its opening, use the Instagram caption generator, and for a caption written from your actual photo, the Instagram image caption generator.
How teams picture using RepeatPost
“Honestly, the calendar is what sold me. I could see every channel in one view and spot the week we'd gone quiet. Before this I was juggling three spreadsheets and a Slack thread. Now I plan the month on a Monday morning and I'm done by half ten.”
Hannah Whitfield
Marketing Manager
United KingdomJun 14, 2026“We run social for eleven clients and keeping them separate used to be a genuine anxiety of mine. Workspaces fixed that. Each client sits in their own space, approvals route to the right person, and I've stopped worrying that someone's going to push a dental practice promo to a restaurant account at 6am.”

United StatesJun 29, 2026“I batch a fortnight of content on a Sunday arvo and then I don't think about it again. Reckon it's saved me a solid day a week. Only gripe is the mobile app still feels a step behind the web version, so I do the actual planning on my laptop. Everything else is spot on.”
Chloe Baxter

AustraliaJul 11, 2026“I'm handling social for four small brands and writing captions was eating my whole morning. The AI drafts are actually quite usable now. I still rewrite maybe every third one to sound like the client, but starting from something beats staring at a blank box. The hashtag tool alone I'm using daily.”

IndiaJul 30, 2026“I sell fabrics and my customers find me on Instagram mostly. Posting used to be whenever I remembered, which was maybe twice a week. Now I sit down every Sunday evening, load up two weeks, and it goes out on its own. Sales have followed. I'd like to see WhatsApp added properly, that's my one ask.”

The approval flow sorted that in a week. Fair play, it's the least glamorous feature on the site and it's the one I'd miss most.”

Around 125, though Instagram does not publish an exact figure and it varies slightly by device. The practical approach is making sure your promise is complete well before that point.
Yes. A caption opening is read after the image has already stopped the scroll, while a Reels hook competes for the first second before the viewer has any context, and usually has to work with the sound off.
No. They consume the visible characters your hook needs, which is the most expensive place on the whole post to spend them. Park them at the end of the caption, or move them into the first comment.
No, the viewer can already see it. The opening should add something: the context, the claim, the surprise or the reason the image matters. Description wastes the most valuable line you have.
It converts the attention you already have into engagement, which does feed back into reach. But Instagram distributes primarily on engagement and watch time, so a strong line on weak content only gets more people to notice the weakness.
