Instagram search stopped being only about hashtags some time ago. It now matches your name field, your captions and your alt text, which means keyword placement matters in places most accounts never touch.

All about the Instagram keyword tool
Instagram search is no longer just hashtags
For years the only way to be found on Instagram was through hashtags. That changed: search now matches account names, caption text and image alt text, and returns accounts, posts and Reels for plain word queries. The practical implication is that keyword work has moved from the tag block at the end of a caption into places most accounts ignore entirely. The name field in particular carries real weight and is separate from your username, yet a large proportion of accounts still fill it with a personal name and nothing else.
Where to put keywords on Instagram
Four surfaces, in rough order of how much they matter.
- The name field. This is the searchable 30 character field under your username, and "Sarah | Vegan Recipes" is findable in a way that "Sarah" is not.
- Captions. Written naturally, using the words someone would search rather than only your own phrasing.
- Alt text. Instagram lets you write it manually, it is read for search, and almost nobody bothers, which makes it easy ground.
- Hashtags, which still contribute but no longer carry search on their own.
- Your bio text, which is read by visitors but is weighted less for search than the name field is.
- Keep it natural everywhere. Stuffed keywords read badly to humans and do not help proportionally.
What Instagram search actually returns
Knowing the result types explains where to aim.
- Accounts, matched largely on the name field and username, which is why that field matters so much.
- Individual posts and Reels, matched on caption text and alt text.
- Hashtags and places, which are the older result types.
- Suggested searches as you type, which reveal what people are actually looking for in your niche.
- Results are personalized, so what you see is not necessarily what a stranger sees.
Who uses this tool
Accounts that want to be found rather than only served to existing followers.
- Local businesses, since location plus service is a common Instagram search.
- Niche creators whose audience actively searches for the subject.
- Service providers whose customers look for a category rather than a brand.
- Accounts with good content and poor discovery, where the profile is not searchable.
- Anyone whose name field is just their name, which is most accounts.
Instagram search surfaces
Where keywords belong and how much each field carries.
| Field | Limit | Search weight |
|---|---|---|
| Name field | 30 characters | Highest, and usually unused |
| Username | 30 characters | Matched for accounts |
| Caption | 2,200 characters | Matched for posts and Reels |
| Alt text | Manually editable | Read, and rarely filled in |
| Bio | 150 characters | Lower than the name field |
| Hashtags | 30 maximum | Contributes, no longer carries |
| Personalized results | Yes | Your view differs from a stranger’s |
| Cost | Free | No account and no card |
Instagram has expanded search matching over several years without documenting the weightings, so this reflects observed behavior. Checked September 2026.
When this is not the right tool
Search is a smaller share of Instagram discovery than Explore and Reels recommendations, which are driven by engagement rather than keywords. So keyword work helps people find you deliberately, while the content still has to earn the algorithmic reach that makes up most of the traffic. It also cannot show live search volume, and Instagram results are personalized, so what you see when testing is not what a stranger sees. For the name field and bio themselves, use the Instagram bio generator, and for captions the Instagram caption generator.
How teams picture using RepeatPost
“Honestly, the calendar is what sold me. I could see every channel in one view and spot the week we'd gone quiet. Before this I was juggling three spreadsheets and a Slack thread. Now I plan the month on a Monday morning and I'm done by half ten.”
Hannah Whitfield
Marketing Manager
United KingdomJun 14, 2026“We run social for eleven clients and keeping them separate used to be a genuine anxiety of mine. Workspaces fixed that. Each client sits in their own space, approvals route to the right person, and I've stopped worrying that someone's going to push a dental practice promo to a restaurant account at 6am.”

United StatesJun 29, 2026“I batch a fortnight of content on a Sunday arvo and then I don't think about it again. Reckon it's saved me a solid day a week. Only gripe is the mobile app still feels a step behind the web version, so I do the actual planning on my laptop. Everything else is spot on.”

AustraliaJul 11, 2026“I'm handling social for four small brands and writing captions was eating my whole morning. The AI drafts are actually quite usable now. I still rewrite maybe every third one to sound like the client, but starting from something beats staring at a blank box. The hashtag tool alone I'm using daily.”

IndiaJul 30, 2026“I sell fabrics and my customers find me on Instagram mostly. Posting used to be whenever I remembered, which was maybe twice a week. Now I sit down every Sunday evening, load up two weeks, and it goes out on its own. Sales have followed. I'd like to see WhatsApp added properly, that's my one ask.”

NigeriaAug 18, 2026“Our team is five people and we were losing posts in Slack threads. Someone would approve something, someone else would tweak it, and nobody knew which version went live. The approval flow sorted that in a week. Fair play, it's the least glamorous feature on the site and it's the one I'd miss most.”

Yes. Search matches account names, caption text and image alt text, and returns accounts, posts and Reels for plain word queries. Hashtags still contribute but no longer carry discovery on their own the way they once did.
The name field, which is the 30 character field under your username and separate from it. It carries the most search weight on a profile, and most accounts fill it with just a personal name.
It is read, and you can write it manually rather than relying on the automatic version. Very few accounts fill it in, which makes it unusually easy ground, and it improves accessibility at the same time.
They help, but the name field matters more for search. Use the bio to convert a visitor once they arrive, and put the term you most want to be found for in the name field where it does the searching work.
No, Instagram does not publish it and this tool has no access to it. The search suggestions that appear as you type in the app are the most useful proxy for what people in your niche are actually looking for.
Smaller than Explore and Reels recommendations, which are driven by engagement rather than keywords. Keyword work helps people find you deliberately, but the content still has to earn the algorithmic reach that makes up most traffic.
