X (Twitter) post preview
Free X (Twitter) Post Preview
Two things catch people out on X: links count as a fixed length regardless of the real URL, and a post with four images lays them out in a grid that crops each one. This shows both before you publish.

All about the X post preview
Character counting on X is not straightforward
A post on X is limited to 280 characters on a free account, but the counting has quirks. Links are counted as a fixed length regardless of how long the actual URL is, so shortening a URL saves you nothing on the character count. Certain characters count as more than one. And attaching an image does not consume characters at all. The result is that the number in your head and the number X applies frequently differ, which is why a post you thought would fit gets rejected at the moment you try to send it.
What to check before posting
The formatting failures that happen after you press post.
- The real character count with links counted as X counts them, not as you typed them.
- How multiple images are laid out, since two, three and four images each produce a different grid with different crops.
- Whether the important part of each image survives that crop, because the grid trims aggressively.
- What the link card shows, since it comes from the shared page rather than from anything you type.
- That each post in a thread works alone, because any one of them can be reposted or seen in isolation.
- How it reads on mobile, where most of the timeline is consumed.
Images and cards behave differently
Two media systems on the same platform, with different rules.
- Uploaded images appear in a grid whose layout changes with the number of images, and each is cropped to fit.
- A single image gets the most space and the least aggressive crop, which is why it usually performs best.
- Link cards are generated from the Open Graph tags on the linked page and cannot be edited on X.
- A post containing both a link and an uploaded image will show the image rather than the card.
- Alt text can be added per image, and X shows an ALT badge on images that have it.
Who uses this tool
People posting frequently who want to avoid predictable errors.
- People writing threads who need each post to stand alone.
- Marketers sharing links who want to see the card before publishing.
- Anyone posting multiple images and losing the important part to the grid crop.
- People who keep hitting the character limit unexpectedly because of link counting.
- Agency staff reviewing client posts ahead of publication.

| Element | Behavior | Notes |
|---|---|---|

| Images | Do not consume characters | Up to four per post |
| Multi image layout | Grid, cropped | Layout changes by count |
| Link card | From Open Graph tags | Not editable on X |
| Image plus link | Image wins | The card is suppressed |
| Alt text | Per image | Shows an ALT badge |
| Processing | In your browser | Nothing is uploaded |

When this is not the right tool
Previewing catches formatting errors, not weak posts. On X the things that actually determine reach are posting volume and replying, neither of which a preview affects, and the X competitor analytics tool usually makes that gap obvious. It also cannot change a link card, since that is controlled by the shared page and set with the meta tags generator. For the posts themselves, use the X caption generator.
How teams picture using RepeatPost
“Honestly, the calendar is what sold me. I could see every channel in one view and spot the week we'd gone quiet. Before this I was juggling three spreadsheets and a Slack thread. Now I plan the month on a Monday morning and I'm done by half ten.”
Hannah Whitfield
Marketing Manager
United KingdomJun 14, 2026“We run social for eleven clients and keeping them separate used to be a genuine anxiety of mine. Workspaces fixed that. Each client sits in their own space, approvals route to the right person, and I've stopped worrying that someone's going to push a dental practice promo to a restaurant account at 6am.”

United StatesJun 29, 2026“I batch a fortnight of content on a Sunday arvo and then I don't think about it again. Reckon it's saved me a solid day a week. Only gripe is the mobile app still feels a step behind the web version, so I do the actual planning on my laptop. Everything else is spot on.”

I still rewrite maybe every third one to sound like the client, but starting from something beats staring at a blank box. The hashtag tool alone I'm using daily.”

IndiaJul 30, 2026“I sell fabrics and my customers find me on Instagram mostly. Posting used to be whenever I remembered, which was maybe twice a week. Now I sit down every Sunday evening, load up two weeks, and it goes out on its own. Sales have followed. I'd like to see WhatsApp added properly, that's my one ask.”

The approval flow sorted that in a week. Fair play, it's the least glamorous feature on the site and it's the one I'd miss most.”

Questions
They count as a fixed length regardless of the real URL, so a very long link costs the same as a short one and shortening saves you nothing on the count. A shortener is only worth using for click tracking.
No. Attaching up to four images does not consume any of your 280 characters, so the full text allowance remains available alongside the media rather than being shared with it.
Because X lays multiple images out in a grid and crops each to fit. The layout changes depending on whether you post one, two, three or four, and a single image gets the most space and the least aggressive crop.
If a post contains both an uploaded image and a link, the image takes precedence and the card is suppressed. Card content also comes from the shared page Open Graph tags rather than from anything you type on X.
Yes. Any individual post can be reposted or encountered in isolation, so one that only makes sense in sequence will confuse people who meet it out of context. The first post especially needs to work by itself.
No, the preview renders in your browser, so the text and images stay on your device. That matters if you are drafting an announcement that has not been made or working on something under embargo.
